"Then why is it that every time I speak with you, it is 'Ra'idah this' or 'Griselda that'?"

He looked at the man. The question was strange and seemed to indicate something... but the question was what.

"She is part of my life. She hears much of you."

"Hmm. But Jasmine is also a part of your life, as is your sister, as is the entire domain. There is a difference, my son, in having someone as a part of your life and having someone be your whole life."

He smiled.

"Jasmine is my sister but she really isnt that much a part of my life. She goes very few places and does very little other than be around you. And as for this entire domain.. you hear plenty about it but you concentrate on the one thing that really irritates you father. Why does she irritate you?"

"She doesn't. It's your reaction to her that irritates me."

"So your main complaint is that I spend too much time thinking about her and you think I neglect my duties?"

"Primarily, yes. I think you've lost sight of what is truly important, to the Toreador."

He looked down at the floor and then looked up at his Sire.

"And what is it specifically you think I have lost sight of father?"

"The beauty of the world. You only see the beauty of the woman."

He looked at her.

"I see the beauty of the world still father. I just do not celebrate that of other people on quite an intimate level as I used to. You have seen the house have you not? I encouraged Cass's exhibition I honor the rose given to me by Teddy. I still go out and surround myself. I just.. do not swim in the water of flesh."

"And why is that? Have you decided that you no longer see the most perfect form of beauty that there is?"

He looked at the man quietly. He spoke softly when he did.

"And what perfect form of beauty are you speaking of father."

Though he knew.

"The beauty of a face being pleasured, most especially when that face has never known such pleasure before?"

He nodded.

"It is a very special kind of beauty. A precious one even. But it becomes tiring does it not? The first time you pleasure someone...they are so new. A wonderful thing, but they do not know your buttons and your preferences. They are always so...clumsy. You were never clumsy. You knew me inside and out. I prefer that I think. Do you not prefer the third time over the first father?"

"Yes, I do. But that does not mean to spend all of your time with that which can and does become old and worn."

He smiled but kept it to himself. It would not help now.

"Are you waiting for it to become old and tired between her and me? Father, is it so important that I spread my attention to the world? or is it more important that I spread my attention among those I love?"

"It is cruelty to continue in such a manner as this farce. It will become old and worn. I know you, my son."

He looked at the man and sighs.

"Maybe it will. Maybe I will grow tired of her. I dont want to... but you know me and i know you do. And still I know she would rather have every moment with me till I do, than for me to leave her while I still can love her even for a moment. Is that so wrong? To want joy just a little longer?"

"That depends on how much of her heart you wish to rip from her. The longer you wait, the more painful it will be."

He looked at his sire and then the floor.

"And yet, I think if I pulled away from her she would die. Worse than that.. I think I would die father. I really do love her."

"And so you would let it build, until the pain will most certainly be unbearable? Are you that selfish?"

Estaban just looked up into his face. He had been here to be strong to convince the man. He had gotten so far, had gotten his Sire to reveal so much. And in two sentences had been brought low. He lowered his eyes and opened his mouth but no words came out.

He stared at his son.

"You are, aren't you?"

He looked up at the man.

"The very idea of hurting her, hurting her at all ... is like someone ripping my heart out of me father. I.. I will ask her. What she wants. What more can I do than actually hurting her by leaving her? Is it that important to you.. that I leave her? Does it mean that much?"
