Scene - Learning from the God Squad - Iron Heart - Ren

It was late. Ren was sitting up on the roof sorting through her annoying confused feelings about what she was doing. About the path she had chosen. She was still having trouble dealing with the guilt. It should have been easier than this. She'd always been told there was something different about her, but was she so different that she couldn't manage to lose her humanity even when she wasn't clinging to it? It was strange, and frustrating. Endlessly frustrating. It was only made worse by the fact that she swore she wouldn't use her Thaum or the gifts that Mat's blood had granted her. That had almost bit her in the ass, but she wasn't going to risk either Rai or Mat for her own life, and those she was with didn't need her protection so she felt no obligation to risk one to save another. She went without and was reminded, horribly, what Presence could do. Worse, she was reminded just how much she hated it.

She needed another method.

She pondered her options as she looked up at the stars.

There was a soft sound behind her. A man appeared. She had seen him before, though she had not actually spoken with him. He came out to the rooftop, looking out over the city below him. The times she had seen him, he always seemed to be contemplative. This time was no different. He was studying the city below him with a blank expression.

He wasn't trying to be rude. She knew that by the way that he had made his steps around her careful, making sure to not startle her, making certain that she knew of his presence, and going to great pains to make certain that he didn't disturb her. And now he stood silently, gloved hands folded behind his back and sword at his hip, just ... watching.

She glanced up at him, studying him for a moment. She turned her focus back out over the city. "It's quiet tonight." Her voice was soft, not carrying beyond the pair.

He didn't look over toward her, his answer was quiet and soft.

"It usually is, thankfully."

She nodded softly. "Different than what I'm used to."

He still had not turned to look at her. He was keeping a quiet vigil, for something.

"I assume you are used to the chaos of a large population and the sad ignorance that tends to spawn such chaos?"

"Yes. Most of my life has been spent in larger cities. Moments like this are one His most welcome blessings."

The hint of a smile tugged at the man's face. He finally turned toward her, though he didn't extend his hand.

"I am Gideon."

"Renata." She offered as she peered back up at him. Her Spanish name, her Catholic name.

He nodded.

"I know. I have heard of you."

She looked surprised, though she really shouldn't be at this point. "You have me at quite the disadvantage then." She said lightly. Probably several now that she thought about it.

His brows rose as he glanced at her, the hint of a smile tugging at his lips.

"It was quite the buzz around here, to have you brought into the Order."

"Is it always that way when someone new is brought in?"

He nodded.

"Yes. It's rare to find a Kindred who still holds to Faith."

"It isn't easy." She admitted. "I think if I'd had to hold on for too long by myself I may not have been able to."

He nodded, just a brief shake of his head.

"That often happens. Nothing to be ashamed about."

"How long have you been part of the Order?" As always, she was trying to learn everything she could.

The man smiled pleasantly.

"Going on six centuries now. Give or take."

She still had trouble wrapping her brain around such lengths of time.

She glanced at him again. "Are you Brujah?" Discerning clan was nearly impossible for her, it was just a guess.

In truth, she would have had a hard time discerning anyone's Clan. Most of them had the same demeanor and personality. They were kind and sometimes even friendly, but they had a higher purpose, and very rarely forthcoming unless she asked.

"I am, yes."

She smiled a soft half-smile. It was nice having family around, even if they were far more reserved than she was used to, and certainly more distant. Both things suited her fine as she was trying to regain her own sense of both.

"May I ask you something?"

He nodded as he turned to look at her with deep brown eyes.

"Of course, Renata."

She took a few moments to think how she wanted to phrase the question. "Are there ways to defend against those who wish to Dominate you?" Her grey eyes peered up at him, innocent and full of hope.

He tilted his head.

"Several ways. The first and most easiest way to achieve it is to just not look anyone in the eye. Such a power requires eye contact. Deny them that, you deny them the ability to use their power against you."
