He smiled.

"First, you must accept that people must die. Not just those who would attack you, Renata. There are some, that the world would even consider to be 'good people', that must be brought to God's Justice. People do not matter. Kindred do not matter. God is the only one that matters."

Ren closed her eyes, something Mat would know was not common for her, as she absorbed what he was saying. "That used to be so easy to accept." She said softly.

He nodded.

"It is no longer an easy thing to accept, an easy thing to see. But you must, for God is the one who directs our hands."

He smiled and shook his head.

"It is a difficult path, little Renata. Difficult, because you have been taught your whole life that righteousness is doing the exact opposite of what I am teaching you. I do not expect it to come easy. But you must accept it. You must let those feelings come. Then you must confess those feelings to God. Through God, the feelings will fade, and you will come to see that you have done the right thing, the proper thing. If you do not feel God's love, His peace, when the act is over, then you have also sinned and must ask for forgiveness. God will forgive you, for you are His own hand."

He nodded his head once, the smile on his face gentle.

"Give God time to heal you, little Renata. You are not yet prepared to take up the sword to be His hand. But you will. And once you understand such things, you will feel only the peace that these actions will bring to you. Do you know, little Renata, how many have left His teachings behind?"

"oh...no." She shook her head. "I have met many who have left His teachings behind. Mortals and those of our kind."

"I know very few who still hold to his teachings."

He laughed, a soft sound.

"You are currently more human than human, Renata. When that changes, when that fades, you will once again feel no remorse for the things that have to be done."

There was a pause. Just a brief one, hesitant, before he spoke again.

"You know who it is that must die next, do you not?"

"You have a choice of three, Renata. The One that is evil, the Old One who does not know the way and the Pretty One who refuses to see the existence of God."

She swallowed hard. "In this Domain, those all describe many people." Her voice wasn't as steady as she would have liked.
