He placed the telephone call and sat back to wait.

Emily did arrive, no car sound, no motor at all. It was just her. She knocked.

He opened the door for her, all smiles.

"Hi again."

"Hi. How's it going?"

"Really good. Did you have a good Christmas?"

"Ya! I got all kinds of great baby gifts." She showed off her new maternity shirt which hugged her growing belly.

He smiled and moved toward the refrigerator.

"Would you like a drink? And you're lucky to have such wonderful friends."

"Just water thanks!" Emily came inside and closed the door behind her. "Where are all the ladies that live here?"

He laughed.

"Shopping, I believe."

He moved to the cabinet to get a glass, then to the refrigerator where there was filtered water inside to keep cold.

"They do so love to spend my money."

"Oh, even after Christmas?" She giggled.

He brought her the water and a beer for himself. He gave her a 'Really?' look.

"They love spending my money year-round. After Christmas, it's the after-Christmas sales."

Emily accepted the water.

"I guess I'm just not a shopping kind of girl. Never had much money."

He laughed.

"That's because no one has introduced you to the joys of spending someone else's money."

Emily giggled, "Actually, people offer to buy me things all the time. I just don't like troubling others."

"So you don't want to give anything back when they buy you things?"

"Wuh? I always try to do things for them with or without gifts."

"But not bought gifts?"

"No, not usually. Acts of kindness. Being there for them. That kind of thing."

"As long as they see it as you giving something back, I'm sure it's fine. You should still be introduced to the wonders of shopping, though."

Emily shrugged, "Not my style is all. Bought things aren't important."

"Not many see it that way anymore."

"People don't value their souls much anymore. People don't have faith in each other or in God. The best I can do is live by example."

"What makes you think that?"

"That and the people not caring about their souls."
