"I see. Well, wha' else can I think of? Och, aye. I went blind for a night once."

He laughed.

"I went out for a duel, bu' I didna trust th' man I was in th' duel wi'. He was a sly one, an' so I went ahead an' heightened me senses so I could make sure he didna ha' someone on th' roof or some other such nonsense. So when he came up t' shake my hand before th' duel started, he shined a flashlight in me eyes."

She actually looked offended. "That's no way to handle a duel." She had a very particular sense of honor.

"Though I imagine with you still standing here it didn't go too badly."

"Th' lad didna ken tha' I'd spent some time trainin' t' fight blind."

"Aye, it was. Those were th' days, too. When ye could duel in peace."

"Somethin' ridiculous. I apparently insulted his sensibilities or some such nonsense."

He started to laugh.

"Th' man who raped an' murdered me daughter was Ventrue. Th' Ventrue Prince at th' time said tha' he had done me a favor an' tha' they were 'only mortals.' I disagree."

Ren's typically sweet expression vanished, she looked first shocked, then horrified, then dangerously murderous. She tried to speak, but no words came out.

He tilted his head.

"I'm nay verra fond o' Ventrue."

"I can see why." Her voice had taken on a dangerously soft tone. There were some things that brought out the worst in Ren, this was one of them.

"It's done now, though. I canna really hold much against 'em all, anymore."
