| He let himself in with the key that she had given to him. He would have preferred that it be done at home, in his room, but Jamie had a very good point. There were so many people at the Prince's house and they would just be bringing him back here anyway.
Strangely, he was nervous. Even though so much had been explained to him before, he was scared.

| Busy.
He was always so busy. Especially nowadays, with everything heating up around there. He had kept a hand on his ghoul's shoulder the entire walk to the door. He didn't feel the urge to say anything, not right now. They knew that Teddy would be out for just a little bit longer. The Brujah hated to do this in this way. So fast, without any kind of ceremony to it. But this was why he was handing him to Teddy, wasn't it?
Once inside, as soon as the door had been closed and locked, he gripped Medwyn with hands of steel. His hand at the back of the ghoul's neck brought him close, the Prince wasting no time at all in sinking his fangs into the German's throat. Drinking deeply, as there would be two of them full tonight. And right now? It was the Prince's turn to be full, draining the life's blood from the German that he held in his arms.

| If the euphoric bliss of the Kiss wasn't enough to send Medwyn's knees to weaken, the blood loss eventually would. He couldn't be sure which it was that was making his thoughts fuzzy. He was still mortal, just now. He still breathed, but in his haze, he could feel the air as if it were water he was taking into his lungs.
Little by little, the German found himself sinking to the ground with each drop of blood that was taken, with each moment the that Kiss of Jamie's lingered. What was it Medwyn thought about in these last fragile moments of life?

| The children. They flashed in front of his eyes, the memory of each small, starving, dirty face. The ones he'd failed to save, the ones that he had been tortured for trying to save.
His biggest regret.
One would have thought that he would think of Jamie, his Domitor. Or even Teddy, the woman that this was, in reality, all for. But no, it was the children. A series of them, forty or more. And each little face that he could remember as though he had seen them yesterday.

| How awful... How very awful for those children.
He failed. He failed to save them. And the thought, as fresh as it was, seared even more into his mind's eye than ever before-- fueled by the light that was his breath dying.
Soon, he was on his knees, beginning to slump forward. The Kiss? Oh, he still felt it, but in the bliss, there was pain-- horrible, scorching pain that made him cry out. He cried out like the children sent to the gas chambers-- the ones he failed to save.
In death there is power. But power comes with such a price... Did he still want to find out what this little wager would cost him?

| He started to struggle. He couldn't. Couldn't.
On his knees, starting to slump into the form that was Jamie, he started to struggle. Not just crying out, but trying desperately to tell him, to tell the Scot that he had changed his mind. He couldn't... he wasn't strong enough... not strong enough...
And his fear. Oh, the fear that gripped him, that caused his throat to be unable to actually form words, as desperate as he was to convey his wishes to Jamie. Would he, once again, fail?

| But then who would he be failing? He'd still be a burden Jamie, dependent on him for sustenance... He'd be failing Teddy, too... Unable to be her sword and her shield without fail and without restrictions...
Choices, choices... What was more important? Being a child? Or being a man?
The clock was ticking. | |

| He wasn't sure.
It hurt. It hurt so much... so much more than he expected. He had thought that the bliss of the Kiss would carry him, would lift him and carry him from one life to the next. The children, he could still see them. He still remembered their names as well as their faces.
Their eyes!
They were staring at him!
While he struggled with Jamie on the floor of the little apartment that was Teddy's, he wasn't even sure he had a choice anymore. The eyes accused him, the children accused him with their silent faces. He hadn't been strong enough to save him before. Maybe...maybe he would be able to... could he make it up to them? If he were stronger?

| A roll of the dice, that's what it was. Sure, he might be able to save other children... If he put his mind to it. If he acted a certain and did certain things, he could very possibly save them all.
A roll of the dice could bring hope. At least, with their small eyes staring at him, he wouldn't forget. At least he knew that they were watching him. Doesn't give much room to fuck up, now, does it?
15 seconds. In 15 seconds, this world of life would dark.

| The indecision was incredible. He knew that time was running out. he knew it was running out faster than he was ready for it to. Not enough time. Never enough time.
Would he forget, he wondered, if he died?
He would love to forget. To just let go. But no, he knew that he would continue, because Teddy needed him to. Jamie needed him to.
The children wanted him to.

| Oh, and the children... those lost souls... They would make sure of it. Make sure he remembered. They would come to him in his day sleep... And they would haunt his nights.
The pain started in his chest just then, just as he realized what would happen to him. It started in his chest and radiated out through his arms and his legs. There was a kind of peace in death, in the resignation that it was inevitable.
But what he noticed physically the most?
His lips were cold. | |

| For some reason, that thought struck him as slightly funny. He felt the pain in his chest, felt that his heart was not only slowing...but stopping.
He reached for Jamie. He was scared, so scared. He was trembling with both fear and blood loss, at the knowledge that those eyes, those small faces? They would follow him forever. Forever and ever and ever...

| Lights out, boyo.
Medwyn took one last shallow breath and collapsed as he grasped for his Domitor. Here, right now, there was no more thought, there were no faces. There was nothing but a bright light-- the synapses in his brain firing off one last electrical impulse.
So very, very cold. | |

| He was so gentle with the ghoul as he lay him on the floor. And he was gentle with him as he tore open his own wrist, to feed the German...
... to give him an entirely new life.

| It would take some time and a fair amount of blood. Seconds turned to long minutes as the blood dripped down poor Medwyn's throat.
To Medwyn, the peace did not last very long. The bright light seemed to begin to shrink, smaller and smaller. One moment he was flying and the next, he was sinking. As if his soul was floating down gently back into his body. And image popped into his mind-- he could see himself there on the floor of his lover's apartment with Jamie over him.
And all around him, coming out one by one from the ether, they were coming... The lost children were coming for him, lined up like soldiers around his still form. Their little faces were blank, simply watching the process. They died and no blood had brought them back.

| He wanted to scream. He wanted to scream and crawl away. No...no, he wanted to run away, but he couldn't feel his legs. His eyes went from each small face to the next. An apology that wouldn't come from his throat stuck there. He wanted so much to let them go... he didn't know if they were jealous or if they were angry....if they hoped that he would save them now or if they simply wanted to drag him with them to whatever dark place his superiors had sent them to.
His eyes never closed.
He saw everything. And for the first time in a very, very long time... Medwyn let himself try to scream.

| And to his and perhaps Jamie's surprise, the scream was let loose. It was gut-wrenching, a primordial scream like no other. And even as he screamed and seemed to come back to 'life', the blood still poured down his throat.
"Ring around the rosey, pocket full of posies, Ashes, Ashes, We all fall down!"
The children were dancing around him, singing to him. It wasn't exactly peaceful, but it wasn't exactly frightening, either. It was surreal, it was like a dream. Perhaps they were protecting him. Or, perhaps, they were simply circling him like a shark.
When the scream subsided, his sense shifted back as if he were back in his own body. The faces were gone, but he could hear them sing softly, if he listened close enough. But he couldn't hear his heart beat. And he could get over the fact that taking a breath did... nothing. His head hurt, as if he were hungover. His joints were stiff, but bendable. But being a dead body... He felt heavy. And all the light that was had faded and the dim apartment seemed even darker than before.
And his lips... they were still cold.

| He clung to Jamie, hoping against all hope that he held the answer. That he held some sort of relief from the aching, from the heaviness and the pain that came along with being...well...dead. He almost cringed at the sound of his own voice, even as the scream seemed to gurgle a bit in his throat with the blood that still trickled down.
Leaning up, he was still reaching for Jamie. It was heartbreaking, the way his eyes sought out those of the Scot in silent plea for him to help, for him to make it better. At least the large Brujah had fed enough to be able to give him most of his own blood back, in preparation for this exact thing. And Medwyn knew, that's what was in the bag that Jamie had brought with the two of them. Blood that he could keep pouring down the German's throat, if he needed to.
Closing his eyes, he tried to shut out the sound of the children singing. Because right now, there was nothing he could do. He was, as much as he hated to admit it... helpless.

| “Perhaps everything terrible is in its deepest being something helpless that wants help from us," said a lad to Medwyn in German, right next to his ear. It wasn't soothing but... it wasn't threatening. It was a reminder of something, just a thought that was passed from an unseen spectre-- or was it just Medwyn's imagination?
A new feeling threatened to overwhelm him.
Hunger. | |

| The hunger that he had never, ever felt before.
He had been hungry, but this wasn't a hunger for food. This wasn't something that could be sated with a sandwich or something else from the kitchen. No, this was something else, something that gnawed at him, making him start to growl.
He didn't even recognize the sound of his own voice.
He was growling as he fed from Jamie's wrist, watching as the Brujah's eyes changed. Changed, because he was going to take that wrist away from him, take away the delicious blood, the life that flowed from him into the German....
No!
He couldn't let him take that wrist away.

| What was this? Oh... the growling on the outside matched the growling on the inside... Medwyn's Beast was rearing it's jealous little head.
It would be so easy to let it out. So easy to let it consume Jamie... the one who stole his life away... C'mon... Do it. A soul for a soul...

| He couldn't help it. Couldn't help himself. He had known the Beast before, in a much milder form. Once, he had even nearly been lost to it. But this was something different.
He didn't even have the strength to ignore it. The blood that poured down his throat tasted too good, sated him, felt entirely too wonderful for him to fight it.
With another mighty growl, the German simply... gave in.

| He expected it. He expected the Frenzy.
It's why he was on the floor beside Medwyn, his knee shoved into the German's chest. And he was using his weight as well as his strength to hold the German down, while he replaced his wrist at Medwyn's mouth with a bottle of wine -- one that could hold at least 6 points.
