Late Night Scout - Marvin's Haven

There was a knock on the door around 10 o' clock at night, two little girls standing there with a red wagon full of girl scout cookies.

Marvin opened the door and blinked. "Ahh a bit late.... or early for Girl Scout cookies sweety, can I help you?"

"Actually, we were helping we could help you!" The littlest one piped up.

"Would you like to buy any cookies? We have every flavor made." The eldest motions to their wagon. "And at only $10 a box, who could pass up such a deal?!"

Marvin smiled at the little girls. "Six bucks a box is the going rate when they are in season. But how do you propose to help me? Go ahead and give me a hundred dollars worth since they are a scarce commodity right now. Thin mints please." he said pulling the cash out of his wallet and scanning the auras of the two girls.

They were just regular little girls, no magic, no dominate, no insanities. One began counting out ten boxes, while the other took the hundred graciously and stuffed it into her little fannypack. "Thank you so much, Mister!"

"Want some help gettin' these inside?" The one who had unpacked the ten now had her arms wrapped around four of them.

"No thank you though. Aren't you worried being out after dark like this? And it's not safe to offer to go into a stranger's home either." he said taking the cookies in his arms and turning to set them.... damnit all nice and neatly stacked on a small table near the door.

"No, Addison says she'll save us if anything bad happens. She said most people are good, and those that don't deserve what she can do to them if they hurt us." The eldest spoke these words, her smile sweet.

"Lucky for you, and she's right. Most people are basically good. Is this Addison around? I'd like to congratulate her on her leadership and the very good job you two girls are doing."

The little girls shook their heads almost in unison.

"No." The youngest answered bluntly.

"She's at HQ, probably writing up numbers and reports." The eldest offered more information. "I'm sure she wouldn't be opposed to a visitor, however, if you wanted to talk to her."

"I think I would like that. She has my curiosity piqued."

One giggled, the other nodded. "We'll take you, if you want to come."

"Thank you" he said with a smile as he took a light jacket from the coat closet. "I gather she isn't far?"

"Only a couple miles." She offered, turning on her heel. "We always make sure to be back at HQ by sunrise. Addison says now that we're a business, we have to keep regular hours."

Marvin blinked. "Ah yes, regular business hours indeed. Hmmm I do believe I will greatly enjoy meeting her. Lead the way please."

So they began walking. The eldest held the handle of their wagon, dragging it steadily down the street. As they walked, each switched off on telling him some unimportant story of their lives before the orphanage, before Addison, before the move. They talked about their likes and their dislikes, their favorite foods, what they had for dinner last Sunday.

The subjects varied, though the speed in which they rattled everything off did not.

Marvin grinned good naturedly and followed, joining in the banter as needful and maintaining outwardly good spirits.

They walked, and they walked, and they walked. About forty-five minutes passed, and they took a turn into seemingly untraveled woodland. Their prattle didn't end, or even falter as they trekked through thick underbrush, both having an apparent destination in mind.

Just over an hour had passed since they'd left Marvin's home, and they both stopped. "We're here!" A particularly large tree stood in front of them, and as Marvin looked up to where the girls were gesturing, he would see an enormous treehouse buried deep in the branches.

"I see. Well, that certainly is impressive isn't it? Could you let her know she's got a guest then please?"

They nodded, the littlest one running up to the tree. She skillfully began climbing the ladder set there, far too small for an adult to climb. The eldest waited with Marvin and the wagon, smiling cheerfully to him. "You'll like Addison, she's lovely."
